When Raquel Allegra first discovered the technique behind the ethereal cobwebby shredding that would become one of her brand’s hallmarks, the activity became a compulsion. “I was doing it in the car, on planes…” Perhaps she’s exorcised that particular urge. With her Fall ’14 and Spring ’15 collections, the designer has stepped further away from this method of deconstruction—but is finding plenty of other ways to exercise what’s clearly a deep love for the process and physicality of creating her clothes. During the Paris collections, To Live and Dye in L.A., an installation featuring some of the fruits of her labors, opened at the Marais store Merci.
This season saw further exploration of her stellar tie-dyed cashmere pieces, with light distressing around the edges. She toyed with more exuberant color combos (pink, yellow, and black were a surprisingly sophisticated fit) and striping atop sweaters and sweatpants. Cool crocheted slips were new here. Allegra has a preternaturally keen instinct for layering, and styles like these are enough to inspire even the reluctant to give it a whirl; those crocheted pieces looked particularly nice peeking out from under peasant dresses. Denim trousers and a jacket made their debut, handled in a way that felt utterly at home among Allegra’s vocabulary of hemp and silk.
